Mimecast has recently released its Global Threat Intelligence Report H1 2024, highlighting some of the major cybersecurity threats organizations are facing.
The report is based on the analysis of over 1,7 billion messages per day from more than 42.000 customers worldwide.
Increase in Malicious Links
- In the first quarter of 2024, malicious links surged by 133% compared to the same period in 2023, and by 53% in the second quarter
- Attacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated, using multiple layers of false information to deceive victims
AI-Enabled Attacks
- Attacks utilizing AI-enabled tools are becoming more common
- Attackers are using generative AI to create sophisticated phishing templates and bots in call centers to gather information
- A notable example was detected in May 2024, when Mimecast identified over 1.6 million email messages in this type of campaign
Small Businesses Targeted
- Small businesses continue to be the primary targets of cyberattacks
- In the first quarter of 2024, small businesses recorded the highest number of threats per user, peaking at 40 threats per user (TPU).
- Medium-sized businesses also saw more than double the number of threats per user compared to large enterprises.
The report also advises actionable steps that organizations can take to improve their cyber defenses and in particular Mimecast emphasizes the importance of adopting a multi-layered approach to security, combining advanced technologies with ongoing staff training.
